Set up your publications

A publication in BlastsFlow is an audience readers choose, plus the editions you send it. Build one per publication.

What this helps you do

BlastsFlow is built around your publications: the named, recurring things readers subscribe to, like a weekly letter, a morning briefing or a recipe of the week. In the Hub each publication is an audience that readers choose for themselves, and its editions are the messages you send to that audience, one at a time or as a Content Series on its schedule. Readers pick the publications they want and receive each edition when you publish it, by email from the start and on Blasts once they connect.

  • Publication: an open audience named the way readers know it, shown on their preferences page and in Blasts as an interest.
  • Edition: one message sent to that publication's audience, written in Compose or prewritten in a Content Series.
  • Editor: a teammate granted the publications they edit, who publishes to those and reads replies from those.
  • Announcements: a list readers choose for news from you between editions.
  • All Subscribers: everyone receiving from you here, whatever they chose. A send to it reaches the readers of every publication.

When to use it

Do this first, before your first edition, so every reader lands in the publication they asked for.

How to do it

  • Open Audiences and create one audience per publication. Leave each one open (readers choose it) and give it a one-line description of what it covers and how often it arrives.
  • Create any group you fill yourself, like contributors or beta readers, and set it to organization assigns so readers never see it.
  • Invite your editors on Team and grant each one the publications they edit.
  • Bring in your readers: an import with an audiences column naming their publications, or your sign-up form posting to the inbound webhook.
  • For a publication with a steady schedule, write its next editions as a Content Series.

Example

A small publisher runs a weekday morning briefing, a Sunday letter and a monthly recipe edition. It creates three open audiences with those names and an assigned Contributors group, grants the Sunday letter to its editor, imports its opted-in readers with each person's publications in the audiences column, and loads the next four Sunday letters as a Content Series.

Good to know

  • One send reaches exactly one audience. There is no combining two publications or excluding one: a message for the readers of two publications is two sends, and someone who chose both receives both.
  • Onboarding created Announcements only. It put nobody on it, and nothing about your publications is created for you.
  • The Hub knows nothing about what a reader pays. There are no plans, paid tiers or trials here, and an open audience is open to every reader.
